My dreams are made in China
This body of work is made up of scanographyes, macro “photography” made on an Epson flatbed scanner. All the objects are homemade, found or bought at stores that sell products for a creative purpose. For example hobby stores, miniature train shops, flea markets, and toy stores.
A world of gifts, creativity and readymades. Objects that are products of global popular culture, market trends and new technology. Made with the purpose of helping you achieve new levels of creativity and imagination. Cheap plastic materials, commonly used and globally produced. I see these as footprints or fragmented mind maps of global contemporary culture, technology, market forces, artistic strategies and personal references.
Some images combine these type of products with flora found in local nature. There are two reasons for this, the symbolic reference of the objects, and the visual quality of their material surface and it’s form.
By using recognizable objects, but an unrecognizable gravity and size ratio, the image appears to not correspond with a recognizable visual perspective. This is due to the micro level high resolution photo realism and downward gravity of the whole image surface on the scanner. This combination gives the images the surreal but photorealistic texture. The images are only one scan each, and not Photoshopped or a digital photo collage. The files are only retouched and optimized for printing.
